Head on Over to Room18TIS & The Adventures of Kawekakea

Posted on March 18th, 2008 in Kawekakea, Learnerblogs, blogging by mshrm18  Tagged , ,

Now that learnerblogs has just about as much on offer as edublogs …… and wikispaces is still pretty awesome for teachers and students ……….

We’re shifting most of our Class blogging “Stuff” over to Room18 TIS & The Adventures of Kawekakea

The “hub” of our classroom is our fabulous wikispace:  room18tis

Ms H has been making sure that everything here is available over at both of those sites before she finally closes this one down.

Thanks for stopping by every now and again.  We really appreciate you taking the time to read what we’re up too!

Young Writers 07

Posted on October 11th, 2007 in Kawekakea, Learnerblogs, blogging, youngwriters07 by mshrm18

Mr B and Ms H have made a wiki where teachers from all around the world can add their classroom blogs and/or their students blogs so that other classrooms can read and comment on them.  We really want to help start conversations between young writers who are blogging.  There is nothing more exciting than the knowledge that you have a real audience - real people reading YOUR blog!

So go ahead and see what students are blogging about and make someone’s day by leaving them a comment!  Links are below.

Our Latest Collaboration Projects

Posted on September 12th, 2007 in collaboration, life'roundhere07, podcasting, salutetoseuss, technospud_projects by mshrm18

We’re into the second half of our school year now and things are hotting up again!  We’re currently taking part in 3 global projects which you can read more about on our Collaboration page (see the page tabs above).  During Sept 07 - Dec 07 we’re taking part in Jen Wagner’s Technospud Online Project Salute to Seuss, Oct 07 sees us using our PhotoStory3 skills to produce a movie about Life ‘Round Here, organised by Chris Craft, and we’re currently learning how to podcast with a school in Victoria, Australia.  At the moment we’re using Voki to create a vocal introduction to the students in Australia.
Later on in Term 4 we are hoping to make some blogging connections with Mrs Durff and her class in the US.

Skyping with Our Collaborative Partners

Posted on May 3rd, 2007 in projectfeelgood, skype by mshrm18

Today ended with another successful skype session with our collaborative partners in Malaysia.  The theme today gravitated often towards the theme of food.  All students quickly realised that food preferences can be very similar - no matter where you live!  Questions of “Who likes pizza?  Have you heard of milo?  What’s a dim sim?” echoed throughout the class.

Ms C’s fantastic idea of a “hotseat” worked very, very well.  Check out the pictures on their blog.  Next time I’ll remember to take some pictures - promise!

We’re sad ……

The very apologetic man from Orcon came and took away our satellite dish.
We can no longer video conference with anyone BUT we can still skype_logo.png

Video Conferencing with Alabama

Posted on April 6th, 2007 in Video Conferencing by mshrm18

We just experienced the most awesome opportunity to Video Conference with Huntsville, Alabama at 7.00am (our time) 2.30pm the day before (Alabama’s time) on Wednesday. (Thanks to the very generous people at SONY NZ - who have lent us this video conferencing equipment for a few weeks).
Even though Alabama had just had a thunderstorm pass over, the quality of the video conference was still excellent.  With our questions prepared we began to interact with each other.  The types of questions we asked were things like sports played, music and artists listened too, how big is your school, what do you do in your spare time after school, class sizes, subjects available, grades/years at your school, school environment and many, many more.

The things we noticed the most were the word differences and accent as well as our uniform versus Alabama’s mufti! (which is NZ speak for wearing your own clothes).  Y’all was a fascinating word for us to hear.

This was such an exciting event and so easy to do.  Ms H learnt quite a bit about how she would manage a video conference or even a skype call next time.  She’ll post about that a bit later in the new page called Skype/Video Conferencing Tips of this blog.

We’ve decided to create a wikispace together so that we can keep in contact with our new friends in Alabama.  Keep checking back here to see the links when the wikispace has been created.

Anti Cyberbullying Day

01cyberbully150.jpgToday is Anti-Cyberbullying Day.

You can see what we’ve been doing about this serious problem that can occur when you are on-line.
This is an area that we will be continually revisiting throughout the year.

Our Class Blog over at Learnerblogs

Posted on March 23rd, 2007 in Kawekakea, Learnerblogs, Scribe of the Week, podcasts by mshrm18

Our class blog hosted at Learnerblogs is now up and running.  Go on over and take a look.  Very soon you’ll be able to read all about our class mascot, Kawekakea, and his adventures. There will be podcasts to listen to, short videos to watch, student’s work to take a look at and comment on, and the “Scribe of the Week” posts to read. We hope it grows like we’re growing in our digital classroom. Those are just a few of our ideas to get started.

I did think seriously about having our blog run from here but I decided that I wanted to keep this blog space running like a central portal.

Welcome
